FAME
is located in the heart of the newly-constructed Leonhard Building,
a state-of-the-art, $12 million, three-story building, home for the
Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing
Engineering.
FAME is an integrated high bay laboratory for teaching and research
with a 10,000 square foot base area. As the "Factory for Advanced
Manufacturing Education" (FAME), the facility has most of the
elements of a real manufacturing facility. It includes many diverse
manufacturing processes, including casting, welding, machining, forming,
injection molding, assembly, as well as automated high-tech facilities
dealing with robotics and assembly featuring Computer Integrated Manufacturing
(CIM) cells and robots.
The Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) area contains
several state-of-the-art computer numerically
controlled(CNC) machines, an automated storage and retrieval system
(AS/RS) and several industrial material handling robots. A simulation
based control system is utilized for computer integrated control of
the work cells.
The idea of FAME is to give current and future students the ability
to learn and experience what it is like to work in a modern integrated
factory floor. The design includes the capability to download instructions
to workstations from central sources and machining and other fabrications
systems can be monitored from remote sources. CAD/CAM software is
available from central locations to give an overall perspective of
the factory floor. Material handling and scheduling problems are studied
within a factory setting itself.
FAME
Virtual Information Center will soon offer you a journey into the
world of FAME with live factory floor cameras, walk-through virtual
tour, detailed information on machining, manufacturing processes and
technology.
